What is a Gotra?
Gotra is a traditional lineage identity, classically expressed through connection to an ancestral Rishi or Rishi-family. It is used in introductions, saṅkalpa, life-cycle rites, and marriage discussions. Gotra is not a surname or community label.
What is a Pravara?
Pravara is the ceremonial invocation of eminent Rishis remembered within a lineage, commonly one, three, or five names. Forms vary by śākhā, sūtra, region, and family transmission; preserve the family’s exact recitation rather than reconstructing it.
Why Rishi and Gotra names overlap
A Rishi is a seer or remembered ancestor; a Gotra is a family lineage associated with a Rishi-family. Bhāradvāja can therefore name both a Rishi and a Gotra. Ātreya, Kauśika, and Jāmadagnya are lineage or branch forms. The ancestral-stream classification belongs on the Rishi page, not in this Gotra profile list.
